In terms ofliterature, Eliot was a leading figure in challenging the genius andverse of traditional romantic poetry. Preludes portrays the hopelessand monotonous life of the working class in an urbanised, dirty, industrialised city. The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock primarilyrepresents Eliots view on relationships, bon ton and the human subconscience. The modernist feat in poetry began in 1910, where significantfigures such as Ezra Pound and Jule s Laforgues styles clashed withthe romantic styles. This greatly influenced Eliots style andimpacted his way of writing. Some main features used include imagism, allusion and a free verse rhyme scheme. Imagism is mainly concernedwith the use of precise images to get under ones skin a moment, or feeling of acharacter. In Preludes, Eliot creates an image of a yellow fog thatrubs its back licking its tongue into the corners of the flushwhich could also be interpreted as an image of an urban cat at nighttime lurking around the city. It is this image which conflicts withthe romanticists imagination of nature it represents the ugliness ofurban fog.Allusion is an indirect reference to another tex... ...esubconscious. The opening sentence Let us go then, you and I is anexample of Prufrocks cozy self speaking to his outer self. As thepoem flows, the attitude from I will go changes to a hesitant Imight go. It also looked awayfrom the beauty of nature and focused upon the ugliness ofurbanisation, the power of the subconscious and the social issuessuch as women and the working class society.
